Apple Overtakes Nvidia as World's Most Valuable Company Amid AI Shift
NEW YORK — July 17, 2026
Apple has regained its position as the world's most valuable publicly traded company, surpassing Nvidia as investors reassess the long-term outlook for artificial intelligence and broaden their focus beyond the semiconductor sector.
Apple's market value reached approximately $4.88 trillion, edging ahead of Nvidia at about $4.86 trillion after the chipmaker's shares fell 3.5% during Friday's trading. The move marks Apple's return to the top for the first time since April 2025, ending Nvidia's run as the world's most valuable company that began in June 2025.
The shift reflects changing investor sentiment toward AI-related investments. While Nvidia remains a major supplier of processors used in artificial intelligence systems, some investors are placing greater value on companies with diversified revenue streams and the ability to integrate AI into existing products and services.
Apple has spent the past year expanding its AI strategy, including the recent introduction of an upgraded version of Siri aimed at improving the assistant's capabilities. Analysts say Apple's extensive ecosystem of devices and services could help the company generate long-term returns from AI while relying less on the heavy infrastructure spending required by many competitors.
The leadership change also comes as Chief Executive Tim Cook prepares to hand over the role to hardware executive John Ternus in September, marking a significant transition for the company.
Despite losing the top position, Nvidia remains one of the biggest beneficiaries of global AI investment. Its graphics processors continue to power many advanced AI systems, and analysts say the company could reclaim the top spot if market sentiment changes.
Investor interest has also expanded across the semiconductor industry. Memory chip manufacturers have attracted increased attention as demand for AI infrastructure grows, although technology stocks have experienced greater volatility in recent weeks as markets reassess expectations for the sector.
The changing rankings highlight how the AI industry is evolving, with investors increasingly weighing both technological leadership and the ability to turn AI innovation into sustained business growth.
