France Arrests More Than 160 After World Cup Semifinal Unrest

More than 160 people were arrested in Paris and Lyon after disturbances broke out following France's 2-0 defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup semifinal, according to French authorities.

Police said 141 arrests were made in the Paris region after incidents that unfolded on Tuesday night. Most of those detained were suspected of using fireworks that were allegedly directed at police officers and emergency responders.

In Lyon, several hundred people had gathered at Place Bellecour to watch the match. After Spain secured victory, small groups reportedly threw projectiles, including fireworks, toward police officers, prompting riot police to intervene.

Around 20 people were arrested in Lyon in connection with the disturbances. Local authorities said those detained were born between 2002 and 2011.

Officials reported no serious injuries in either city. Authorities also said there was no significant property damage in Lyon as investigations into the incidents continued.

The unrest followed France's exit from the tournament, with police maintaining a visible presence in affected areas to restore order.
